In the group show WHERE THE LIGHT GETS IN, the painting Untitled from Nathan Hylden's series Meanwhile is included. The series is made up of big paintings on aluminum sheets, each depicting a scene from Hylden's studio consisting of the shadows of a fan and a stool. As the sun's light moves during the course of the day, so do the shadows cast from the studio interior, resulting in a suite of slightly varying compositions. The shadow motifs are printed with silkscreen onto the aluminum sheets, and Hylden then continues to paint on top of the prints with acrylic and spray. In applying paint, Hylden makes each work distinct, somewhat separate from the preceding and following, as if asking the observer to reflect upon the ambivalence of passing moments. In tracing the rise and fall of the sun, light becomes synonymous with time, and each painting offers a tangible rendition of a fleeting time in space.
