GERALD DAVIS
We are proud to announce that our little county side gallery in Felanitx will start by doing a pop up at Estragon with Gerald Davis recent works. Opening will be 1st of April 2023 from 6 PM at Placa de Peralada 14, 07200, Felanitx. Known mostly for his figure-based works, Gerald got inspired by the citrus growing in his own Los Angeles garden. He began to make oil paintings in the tradition of Baroque still life, but on a colossal scale (300x200cm). The viewer is dwarfed by enormous clementines and lemons, contained within vases covered with carved figures and big fuzzy bumble bees. On the occasion of the first pop up the local band “HOT HIT” will be playing a 2 hour live set!
To create these often excruciatingly personal images, Davis, begins by drawing in pencil, then goes over the lines with pastels, moving between the two until the image is saturated with one dominant color and the pencil can be erased. The results are incredibly precise drawings, in which strands of hair on a head or veins on a penis are depicted with a disconcerting accuracy.
Gerald Davis was born in 1974 in Pittsburgh, PA. He Iives and works in Los Angeles. He was included in USA TODAY, at the Royal Academy of Art in 2006, and his work is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Also participation in the group show “Paper” at The Saatchi Gallery 2013.
