MALLORCA LANDINGS ANNOUNCES EXPANSION JACOLBY SATTERWHITE ISLAND OF TREASURE + PERFORMANCE
1 NOVEMBER - 20 DECEMBER 2013

“Island of Treasure” is Jacolby Satterwhite’s 2nd solo show at Mallorca Landings Gallery and first artist in our new space on Tomas Forteza 55 in the centre of Palma de Mallorca.

Satterwhite will do a performance and presenting 3 videos in the new space; REIFYING DESIRE 2, REIFYING DESIRE 4 and Country Ball. Also 10 new c-prints will be shown in the old space simultaneously together with REIFYING DESIRE 6 that also will be shown at the 2014 Whitney Biennial curated by Anthony Elms, Stuart Comer and Michelle Grabner.

Reifying Desire 6 is derived from Satterwhite’s observation and live action performances in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The architecture and banal objects become recreated in 3D animation with greater scale, surrealism and anthropomorphism. Satterwhite continues usage of his mothers drawings as another platform; but pushes it forward by outsourcing movement inspired by the objects in the drawing from the general public. The archive of drawings, outsourced bodies, and recorded live action performances in various sites act as a creative restraint for Satterwhite to generate stream of conscious narratives with a motif.

Jacolby Satterwhite received a MFA from University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia in 2010; a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore in 2008 and completed a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine in 2009. He recently was the recipient Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Program, a 1st year and 2nd year Fine Arts Work Center Fellowship (FAWC) in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and The Headlands Center of Arts artist residency. Satterwhite currently has in Contemporary Arts Center Houston in the group exhibition “Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art”. He contributed to Clifford Owen’s “Anthology Project” at PS1/MOMA. His work has recently been exhibited in “Shift: Projects | Perspectives | Directions”, The Studio Museum in Harlem; and Fore, the fourth iteration of the “F” series which includes
Frequency, Freestyle, and Flow. He also has shown in “First Look: New Art Online: Aboveground Animation: 3D-Form”, The New Museum; a Solo show at Monya Rowe Gallery; Sessions at Recess Activities, The Bindery Projects in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a solo show at Mallorca Landings gallery in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
